MARIA KERSHNER, DANCE CAPTAIN 2020-2021
Maria was our Captain for the 2020-2021 dance season. Maria will be an 18 year old freshman in college at University of Tampa. Maria has danced for 15 years, doing a variety of styles including ballet, jazz, modern, tap, hip hop, and pointe, with modern being her favorite. Maria has been a part of many shows, with some notable roles being "Aunt Lettie" in Feel The Rain, and the "Cobra" in Chasing Butterflies. Maria has received both $300 and $400 scholarships to Brenau University’s summer intensive, as well as attending Governor’s School for the Arts, West Virginia dance festivals, and Jackson’s Mill. Some of Maria’s favorite moments from dance are performing and taking classes with a variety of dancers from around the state. She has also learned from dance to try to always be her best self.
Ari is an 18 year old student going into her freshman year of collage at WVU. She has danced at January’s for 15 years and her favorite style of dance being jazz/ musical theater. She trains in multiple styles of dance including ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and pointe. Some of her prominent roles in January’s shows are "Lucy" in Feel the Rain, "Little Match Girl" in The Little Match Girl, "Violet" in Chasing Butterflies, and "Margot" in Feel the Rain. Ari has revived scholarships for WVU Summer Dance Intensive, Alvin Ailey Summer Dance Intensive, $1000 to the summer intensive of her choice, Ballet Bootcamp, and Brenau University’s Summer Dance Intensive. Ari has also attended the WVU Summer Dance Intensive, Broadway Dance Center’s Summer Dance Intensive, Governor’s School of the Arts, Ballet Bootcamp, and several master classes through West Virginia Dance Festival. One of Ari’s favorite moments from dance is getting to perform the closing number in shows. Something that Ari has learned from dance is work ethic and time management, in addition to expressing creativity through movement.
Maggie is a 17 year old senior at George Washington High School. She has danced at January’s for 13 years and her favorite style of dance is Jazz. She trains in jazz, ballet, hip hop, tap, ,modern, and pointe. Some of her past roles in shows for January’s are "The Bully" in Feel the Rain, "Ladybug" trio in Chasing Butterflies, Dream Quartet in Little Match Girl, and "Middle Sara" in Second Sara. Maggie is also a part of the East 304 Crew hip hop competition team. Maggie has attended the Koresh summer dance intensive in Philadelphia and WVU master classes. One of Maggie’s favorite moments from dance was when she found out that she had made company and and how she felt so welcomed by the older girls. Maggie says that dance has taught her about the importance of responsibility and has made her stronger mentally and physically. She has also made amazing bonds that she hopes will last a life time. Maggie plans to continue her dancing career in college.
Ally is a 15 year sophomore at George Washington High School. She has taken ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip hop, and pointe since age 2, with her favorites being contemporary, tap, hip hop and jazz. Ally has done a variety of shows with JADCO, with some notable roles being "Middle Sarah" from Second Sara, the "Condor" from Chasing Butterflies, and one of the dancers in the "Bar Trio" from Little Match Girl. Ally has also performed with the West Virginia Symphony for their annual Holiday Show. Scholarships and awards that Ally has received include runner up for 12 and under scholarship of $1000 at Jackson’s Mill (2 times), and an invitation to Joffery’s 4 year trainee program for Jazz and Contemporary. Over her summers, she has attended Cincinatti Ballet, MASDI, CLI, Joffery Ballet West, and Ballet Bootcamp summer intensives. In addition to being a part of company at JADCO, Ally is a member of East 304 Crew competition hip hop team. Something Ally has taken away from dance is the ability to express her creativity through movement, and has made many life long friendships along the way.
Grace is a 15 year old sophomore at Hurricane High School. She has danced for 11 years and with January’s for 6 years with her favorite style being ballet/ pointe. Grace trains in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and pointe. Her prominent roles in January’s shows include "Spider Duet" in Second Sara, "Ballet Quartet" in Feel the Rain, "Queen Alexandra" in Chasing Butterflies, and pointe variation solos in the past 3 years of recital. Other shows Grace has done is the Nutcracker with North Atlanta Dance Academy where she danced for 4 years, and Holiday performance with West Virginia Symphony. Scholarships she has received are First Alternate to University of North Carolina summer dance intensive 2016 and 2017, scholarship to Brenau summer dance intensive 2019, scholarship to LDF Ballet Academy summer intensive, and scholarship to Marshall Universities Master class series 2019-2020 season with an invitation to perform at their Spring Gala. Grace has attended Brenau summer dance intensive in 2019, Ballet Boot camp, WVU master classes, and MADI. One of her favorite moments from dance is getting to perform in the shows and being moved up to company. Something Grace has taken away from dance is how to pick up material quickly and manage time.
Ileigh is an 18 year old student going into her freshman year at WVU. She has danced at January’s Academy of Arts for 13 years and her favorite style of dance is tap. She does ballet, modern, jazz, and tap. Some of her previous roles in JADCO shows include a "Small Bird" in Chasing Butterflies:Captuted, and a creature in Chasing Butterflies 2020. She has danced in numerous JADCO productions in her time at January’s. Ileigh also received a scholarship to Brenau University's summer dance intensive. Some of the master classes/ intensives she has attended are WVU master classes, WV fall festival, and Jackson’s Mill. One of the things that Ileigh enjoys most in dance is the end of performances when you get to see all of the people you made happy with the show. Something she has taken away or gained from dance is confidence and she hopes that everyone enjoys their time at JADCO as much as she did.
Adeline is a sophomore at GWHS. She began dancing at January’s at the age of 3. She enjoys all genres of dance but Ballet remains her favorite. She loves to perform and looks forward to participating in original works directed by January and other dance masters. Her prominent roles include "Young Greta” and “Centipede quartet” in Second Sara, “Young Lucy” Feel the Rain, and “Ladybug Pointe Trio” Chasing Butterflies, She has been awarded Summer Intensive Scholarships from Brenau University, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, West Virginia University, Davis & Elkins College, and Mutual Dance Theatre (alternate) and a $500 cash scholarship alternate. She has attended master classes and summer intensives at WVU and the Ballet School of Chapel Hill. Adeline plans to dance in college as well and knows the skills she is developing now will continue to propel her forward in all aspects of her life.
Audrey is a 16 year old junior at George Washington High school. She has taken ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and pointe for 12 years, with modern being her favorite. Over the years, Audrey has been in many shows with JADCO, with some roles including "Young Sara" in Second Sara, "Pointe Quartet" in Little Match Girl, and "Ladybug Trio" and "Iridescent Firefly" in Chasing Butterflies. Awards for dance that Audrey has received are $250 to Brenau University’s Summer Intensive, and was a $1000 alternate to any summer intensive of her choice. Audrey has attended multiple WVU master classes, and went to Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet Summer Intensive in 2019. One of Audrey’s favorite moments from dance is all of the times from backstage before shows when the nerves before a performance always excite her for her performance as well. She has also taken away from dance the ability to manage her time.
Sida is an 18 year old student going into her freshman year of college at WVU. She has danced at January’s Academy of Arts for 15 years and her favorite style of dance is modern. She trains in ballet, jazz, modern, tap, and pointe. Some of Sida’s prominent roles in January’s shows include "Sara" in Second Sara, "Madame Dupree" in Chasing Butterflies, And "Lucy" in Feel the Rain. She has performed in every Charleston JADCO production since 2008. She has received scholarships to Alvin Ailey summer intensive, NJDTE summer intensive, and Indiana University summer intensive. Sida has attended Alvin Ailey, Boston Conservatory, Hubbard Street, and Broadway Dance Center summer intensives. One of Sida’s favorite dance memories is laughing with her friends and creating movement together. Through dance she has learned to listen, take corrections, be open, and make amazing relationships. Sida is attending WVU in fall 2021 to double major in dance and exercise physiology.
Kinley is a 17 year old junior at George Washington High School. For over 13 years, Kinley has taken ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop, and pointe, with jazz being her favorite. Kinley has done many shows with The Academy of Arts at January’s, including Chasing Butterflies: Captured, where she was "Merrit", Finding Boots, Second Sarah, Feel the Rain, Little Match Girl, and Chasing Butterflies where she was a creature. Kinley has attended many Master Classes, including some from WVU, Jackson’s Mill, and Governor’s School for the Arts, summer dance intensive at Charleston Ballet and MADI 2021. Kinley is also one of our student teachers for younger kids. One of Kinley’s favorite parts of dance is performing, and she has taken away confidence from dance.
